penumbra and textools
There are two ways to apply mods to your game, the first being a "simpler" way using a program called Textools and the second is a slightly more complicated (but much more worth it and you will see why!) way of doing it using Penumbra. Penumbra require Dalamund to work. Both have pros and cons that I will go into and I will teach you how to set both up so you can use the one that works for you!★PICK ONE AND ONLY ONE OF THE TWO!
Penumbra Pros: Much more control over your game, you can set mods to specifically work on just yourself or your retainers for example. Easy to change or swap anything instantly in game. Some mods come with options that you can change in game. Overall, more control.
Penumbra Cons: A bit confusing at first
Penumbra Cons: A bit confusing at first
Textools Pros: You don't have to mess with any folders or files, just double click the mod file, load it in and it's ready to go in game. It's also useful for finding and viewing character and gear models. Tends to be updated faster after a patch so you can have your pretty character back sooner.
Textools Cons: Less control. You have to log out and back in to change or remove anything. Your mods show up on every character in the world using the same thing.
How to set up penumbra
First things first. You will need Dalamund in order for Penumbra to work. Once you have followed that guide and have it set up, it's time to start modding!!! Head over to the Penumbra Github page for the repo info but I will include it in this page. Sometimes the repos change so if the one below isn't working, check the repo for an updated version.Press ESC on your keyboard and click the second Dalamund Settings option, it will bring up the menu.
Click "Experimental" and scroll down until you see the the option to add URLS. Go to the Penumbra Github Repo or copy/paste the code below into the line.
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/xivdev/Penumbra/master/repo.json
check the "enabled" box and click the floppy disk icon to save. This will make it so Penumbra shows up in the Plugins window.
Close out of settings and press ESC again to open up the Dalamund Plugins option
The Plugin Installer will pop up. After clicking "All Plugins" on the side, go over to the top right, type "Penumbra" A few other plugins might pop up, but the one we are looking for is Penumbra. (Don't ask why I have it twice, I don't know lol, yours probably won't do this) Make sure the toggle is on and close it out.
Adding mods to penumbra
Now that Penumbra is set up on your game, I will show you how to set up the mods folder for Penumbra and how to set up the collections so specific mods will apply to certain characters or mobs and not others. In the in game chat box, type /penumbra to bring up the menu. You can also macro this command to and add it to your action bars because you will probably be going in and out of Penumbra pretty often.
Check the "Enable Mods" button and create a folder somewhere on your computer. Don't put it in your FFXIV folders, the Dalamund folder. If you hover over the (i) it is recommended you keep the path short. As you can see in my example, i put it on a SSD but put it anywhere really and name it whatever you want ("FFXIV mods" is what mine is named)
★ONLY .ttmp / .ttmp2 / .pmp FILES GO IN YOUR MODS FOLDER!
Setting up Collections
Collections are how make mods work on certain charcters, npcs, mobs. You can make collections for just about anything. This ensures mods don't show up in places you don't want them to.1. Click the bottom left on the + button to add a collection.
2. Name it anything you want. I name mine after my characters.
3. You can leave the world empty or not but put you character's first and last name in the box. If you want to add a pet or retainer to the collection you must summon them or have them in your vicinity for the game to "see" them and type their name where you would have put yours.
you can have multiple collections for one charcter or npc but only one active at a time.
adding mods
Now the fun part! this is where your mod collection is! Everything can be nicely organized and seen in one place.
I'm gonna use my character's current face mod as an example. Click the mod and click enabled. You can leave the priority at 0 unless you have multiple mods of the same type and you want one to work over another. Some mods have options, some don't. Click the options you want if they are available. and click "Self" at the bottom to apply these settings.
Here it is in action ^____^
thats it!! if you are using penumbra, ignore everything below!
How to set up Textools
You don't need any in game plugins in order to run textools, it is a standalone program that injects the mods into your game. In order to change or remove anything, you must exit the game and restart it for it to show.Head over to the Textools website and click download, run the .exe and follow the download prompts. After it's finished downloading, open it, select your language and locate where you FFXIV is saved on your computer. Then go to the "sqpack" folder, then select the "ffxiv" folder.
adding mods
once you have your mod downloaded, navigate to where you have it saved and double
click on it and some options will pop up.
After double clicking, select any options that you'd like and after the mod finishes importing, start your game and you are good to go!
removing mods
To remove a mod, click "Mods" at the top right, then "Mod List", then "Manage Mod List"
This Menu will come up, press delete, then you can start your game and the mod will be removed.
